A Combined Lithium Intercalation and Plating Mechanism Using Conductive Carbon‐Fiber Electrodes

Abstract Lithium‐metal anodes (LMAs) are desirable for next‐generation rechargeable batteries because of their high energy density. However, in practical applications they hindered by inhomogeneous and uncontrolled lithium‐dendrite deposition during cycling. Herein, we propose a dual charge storage mechanism, using freestanding carbon‐fiber paper (CFP) with carbon fillers electrode. These CFP electrodes manufactured at an industrial scale act both as host lithium (Li) intercalation conductive porous 3D scaffold Li plating/stripping. The electrode exhibits excellent long‐term cycling stability, evidenced Coulombic efficiencies over 99.5 % on the 250 th cycle CFP|Li half‐cells lithiation capacity 1.5 mA h cm −2 current density 0.5 . We also demonstrate that CFPs sufficiently electrically to operate small pouch cells without metal foil collectors, further improving proposed electrodes.
